We are:

The St. Michael Legion was chartered shortly after the end of World War II in 1946, with 18 members. The Legion didn’t have a building but had a clubhouse down by the river at the Sportsmen's Club. At that time the Legion relied on a yearly trap shoot to finance its operations.

It wasn't until 1981 that the Legion would relocate into a building on County Rd. 19 just south of Hwy. 241.  The building was constructed in 1956 and served as the old Security State Bank. The bank vault was converted into a beer cooler.

The Legion had 55 members when it located to the building, and has close to 200 members today.

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans.

Hundreds of local American Legion programs and activities strengthen the nation one community at a time. American Legion Baseball is one of the nation’s most successful amateur athletic programs, educating young people about the importance of sportsmanship, citizenship and fitness. The Heroes to Hometowns program connects local Legionnaires with recovering wounded warriors and their families, providing a variety of support activities. The Legion raises millions of dollars in donations at the local, state and national levels to help veterans and their families and to provide college scholarship opportunities.

The American Legion is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization with great political influence perpetuated by its grass-roots involvement in the legislation process from local districts to Capitol Hill. Legionnaires’ sense of obligation to community, state and nation drives an honest advocacy for veterans in Washington. The Legion stands behind the issues most important to the nation's veterans community, backed by resolutions passed by volunteer leadership.

The American Legion’s success depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism. The organization belongs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives.

Service:
The Legion members are proud of the community service their organization has provided for almost 60 years. Since 2006 the Legion and Auxiliary donated nearly $300,000 to charity, and also  since that time has paid more than $800,000 in taxes.

The Legion is proud to have served the following organizations: Hanover Food Shelf, schools, churches, youth programs, Legion baseball, vets programs, scholarships, youth sports, Special Olympics, Courage Center, STMA high school sports, American Cancer Society, Sea Devils Swim Club, Veterans on the Lake, grad parties, Hanover Honey Bees, St. Michael Foundation, Business Professionals of America, Boy/Girl Scouts, DARE, St. Michael Historical Society "and many more."

We have a 5-star rating.  Meaning 50% of its money is given to donations.

Other functions that are provided by the legion include:  military rite funerals, flag dedication and education, Memorial Day and Vets Day programs, Flag Day (Damaged Flag Disposal), parade marching and providing flags to cities.

On March 10th, 2011, the current ‘home’ was purchased.

We opened the doors to the public at the new 25 Central Ave E location on April 14th 2011.

Flag Etiquette

Flag Etiquette

STANDARDS of RESPECT

The Flag Code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used. They are:

  • *The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.

  • *The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a speakers desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.

  • *The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard

  • *The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.

  • *The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind.

  • *The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.

The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.

When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.

Note: American Legion Post 567 regularly conducts a dignified flag burning ceremony, often on Flag Day, June 14th. Contact us to inquire about the availability of this service.

We also have New Flags available for Purchace.
